dangerous summer

dangerous summer

I love 80s dancehall. The sweet spot between '70s roots and '90s franetic ragga that I could just never get with. Some say the 90s reflect the introduction of cocaine and crack to Jamaica, though I'm not sure how true that is. Maybe it was also just the natural regression from the continued pressure on an island where constant struggle was the baseline.

From the mid to late '80s, Jamaicans were brining Casios into the studio and just toasting over boxed rhythms to great success, with Wayne Smith's Under Mi Sleng Teng being the most famous.

The name of this mix comes from a Conroy Smith song called Dangerous that I used to play loud off a cassette mix in the summer of 1990 while I drove around in my car and this music always sounds good to me in the summer.

I was listening to Grateful Dead's roadie Big Steve's radio show the other day and he said about music "something that once brought you joy will always bring you joy..." This will always bring me joy.
